Veterans' Memorial Park Reopens with Community-Chosen Features

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is pleased to announce the re-opening of Veterans' Memorial Park, following extensive renovations made possible through a grant from the California State Parks and Recreation Division's Proposition 68 funding. These improvements were shaped by community input and are designed to enhance the park experience for visitors of all ages. Even more enhancements are on the way. A rededication ceremony is scheduled for spring of 2025.

The revitalized park now features a modern event plaza, a state-of-the-art playground, walking paths, outdoor exercise stations, and upgraded landscaping and lighting throughout. These additions were selected through community-driven planning meetings, which included the participation of youth, seniors, and families, ensuring that the park reflects the needs and desires of the Santa Maria community.

“We are thrilled to reopen Veterans' Memorial Park and provide a space that reflects the input of so many in our community,” Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Services Manager, said. “This project is a testament to what can be achieved when we listen to the voices of our residents and work together to create something special for everyone.”

Veterans' Memorial Park, long cherished by the Santa Maria community, has been revitalized to continue serving as a gathering space where people can connect, stay active, and enjoy nature. The upcoming rededication ceremony in spring 2025 will further celebrate the park’s significance to the city, honoring its past while looking toward its future.

Community members are encouraged to visit Veterans' Memorial Park, located at 313 West Tunnell Drive, to explore its new features.
