Musical Magic a Hundred Years in the Making

The Santa Maria Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Michael Nowak welcome a guest ensemble, the Allan Hancock College Singers, to close out the 2024-25 concert season with a concert that explores a sƟrring and profound range of human expression. “The Sacred and The Profane” will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 7:30pm at Grace Baptist Church (605 E McCoy Ln, Santa Maria, CA 93455).

Early 20th Century composer Darius Milhaud expresses French exoticism through jazz-inspired harmonies and rhythms that portray an African creation myth in the ballet suite “La Creation du Monde”.

Maestro Nowak and the Philharmonic Orchestra will be joined by the Allan Hancock College Singers for a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Requiem”, the legendary unfinished threnody penned the same year of the composer’s death.

The synergy between the Allan Hancock College Singers and the Santa Maria Philharmonic on this piece marks a partnership 100 years in the making. The earliest formal efforts toward orchestra performance in Santa Maria date from 1925, when local musicians would meet at private homes, most often that of G. Allan Hancock, himself a cellist and classical music enthusiast. We are quite sure you will not want to miss the magic of this music, and we look forward to seeing you there.

PS - this concert is perfect for the enƟre family. The SM Phil warmly invites all children to experience the magic of orchestral music at no cost with the purchase of an adult ticket.
