Crosstown rivals from Pioneer Valley and Santa Maria High Schools will settle the unofficial ownership of Main Street with events on Wednesday and on the football field Friday night, November 1.
At high noon on (October 3Oth) - players, coaches, athletic directors and a few administrators from the Saints and Panthers met for a friendly lunch and some easy-going conversation during the “Main Street Classic” at Cool Hand Luke’s restaurant.
“This year will be another interesting game as both teams are struggling and need a victory to cap off their regular season,’’ said SMHS Athletic Director Dan Ellington. “If we win, it creates energy moving forward into the next season or the playoffs. A loss ends their season and puts a bad taste in their mouth. I am sure both teams had this game circled on their schedule as a must win, so turn on the lights and let's go!”
“Great rivalries don't have to be built on hatred,’’ said PVHS Athletic Director Anthony Morales. “They're built on respect, on a respect for excellence."
Last year, the Saints won 32-7.
Whatever the outcome this year, the game will prove to be an exciting and memorable experience for all.
