The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is pleased to announce the official lighting ceremony at Crossroads Basin field, celebrating the activation of new field lights that will significantly expand field availability for local sports teams and organizations. The “Flip the Switch” event will take place on Wednesday, October 30ᵗʰ at 6:15 p.m. at 2231 South College Drive.
The new lighting installations at both Crossroads Basin and Adam Basin fields extend field usability from fall through late spring, allowing sports teams to practice and compete well into the evening. These lighting upgrades directly support the community’s growing demand for after-school and after-work athletic opportunities.
"These stadium lights are a game-changer for local field sports, especially during the shorter days of fall and winter," Dennis Smitherman, Recreation Services Manager, said. "We are proud to provide more opportunities for athletes to continue practicing and playing in a safe, well-lit environment."
Due to scheduling, the ribbon-cutting event will be held exclusively at Crossroads Basin; however, the lighting upgrades at Adam Basin will provide similar benefits, ensuring more fields are available to accommodate local sports teams’ needs.
Lights are available on a reservation basis until 9:00 pm, most evenings. The LED lights are designed and angled to direct illumination onto the field and away from nearby residences.
Funding for these projects was made possible by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), supporting the City’s commitment to enhancing recreational facilities for community use. This is another Smart City, Safe City program.
Both fields are now available for reservations. For reservations or more information, please visit the Recreation and Parks Department office at 615 South McClelland Street or call (805) 925-0951 extension 2260.
