Tips for better photos
Everyone uses pictures in their marketing. On their profile, on their website, social media, and print. Whether you’re using a pro camera or a cell phone, here are some tips that address common issues I see all the time and will improve your images.
BACKGROUNDS:
- A busy background is a distracting background. Remember, the subject or product is the hero of the story, so if the background has a lot going on (pretty or not) it will take eyeballs away from the main subject.
- Most cell phones have a “Portrait” mode. That will blur slightly the background highlighting the main subject.
- Beware of elements sticking out of the subject. A sign pole, tree branch, bicycle, etc. sticking out of a head or partly hidden behind the body can look awkward. Most of the time, taking a step or two sideways will fix this.
Window glare, glowing signs or a flash reflecting off glass never looks good and is very difficult to fix digitally. You can avoid this by having the light source come at an angle. Don’t have someone wearing glasses look straight at a window, have them turn about 45 degrees. And if you’re using a beauty light or similar light for product pictures, point them from an angle.
FRAMING:
When you take a picture or crop one after, be mindful of where you place the edges:
- Don’t cut off products. Either zoom in to a specific section or fit the whole subject in the frame.
- When framing people, don’t cut off half a hand or foot, or at wrists and ankles. Don’t cut off at half breasts or crotch, either above or below. Mid sections are best, like mid-thigh, mid shin or above the elbow.
- Try framing people slightly off center. Or if the subject is centered, try to have equal spacing around.
These are examples of images that could look better.

These have no glare, no distractions and nothing sticking out of the body. Do you notice a difference?

Start taking pictures with these points in mind and you’ll end up with better images!
