The City of Santa Maria Utilities Department (“City”) invites you to a presentation and workshop about California Senate Bill 1383 and its state goal to reduce the amount of organic waste (food waste and green waste) disposed of in landfills by 75 percent and 20 percent reduction of edible food currently disposed of by 2025.
There are specific requirements for commercial organic waste generators, residents, commercial edible food generators (grocery stores, restaurants, and more), food recovery organizations, and commercial haulers. It is important that these mandated requirements are discussed and reviewed so that there is compliance throughout the City.
Also essential four our community is Edible Food Recovery Program. This program recovers edible food from commercial edible food generators and allows for food recovery organizations to distribute food to those in need. The City is working on increasing opportunities for whole and prepared foods to be distributed by food recovery organizations at food distribution sites. The City is also looking to increase the number of food distribution sites available to the Santa Maria community.
